chapel dates back to the time of Emperor Claudius (AD 43-44).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watchtowers: <\/strong>There are four old stone-built watchtowers in l\u2019Aldea: the eighteenth-century tower beside the twelfth-century Mare de Deu chapel; the sixteenth-century Candela tower; the privately-owned Burjass\u00e9nia tower, first documented in the twelfth-century, located beside the old Burjass\u00e9nia elm tree \u2013 classified as a \u2018monumental tree\u2019; and the Benaixarop (or Vinaixarop) tower from the thirteenth century.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The River Ebro: <\/strong>The river and its surroundings are the star features of any touristic route. The final stretch of the Ebro flows between Amposta and l\u2019Aldea and irrigates the fields of crops via the canal of fresh water running parallel to the river. Other canals and channels form a network to distribute water to nearby fields or to drain the rice fields when necessary.
