Xerta jug\u00f3 un rol clave porque fue lugar de acantonamiento y trabajo de una parte relevante de los reos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los batallones de trabajadores (BBTT) eran unidades integradas por excombatientes presos del Ej\u00e9rcito Popular de la Rep\u00fablica, no procesados por la v\u00eda judicial, pero clasificados como \u2018desafectos\u2019 o \u2018afectos dudosos\u2019 al nuevo r\u00e9gimen dictatorial. A partir de 1940, su figura fue sustituida por los batallones disciplinarios de soldados trabajadores (BDST). En este caso, estaban constituidos por prisioneros de guerra, excombatientes de quinta \u2014con el servicio militar republicano cumplido\u2014 que eran identificados como \u2018desafectos\u2019, as\u00ed como desertores del ej\u00e9rcito franquista. De cualquier forma, los reclusos eran agrupados en campos de concentraci\u00f3n, clasificados y distribuidos en las unidades de castigo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los primeros esclavos del franquismo trabajaron en la v\u00eda f\u00e9rrea en construcci\u00f3n durante la primavera de 1938 (BBTT n\u00ba 66 y n\u00ba 68), tras la conquista del margen derecho del Ebro por parte del ej\u00e9rcito sublevado. La misi\u00f3n principal era acelerar las obras mediante la instalaci\u00f3n de ra\u00edles en la v\u00eda. A mediados de junio se hab\u00eda completado el objetivo hasta la estaci\u00f3n de Pinell de Brai (Terra Alta). Por otro lado, en la comarca del Baix Ebre, donde la actividad acumulaba un retraso superior, los trabajos fueron suspendidos por el fuego de la artiller\u00eda republicana procedente de la orilla izquierda del r\u00edo. Durante la batalla del Ebro, el trazado hasta Bot facilit\u00f3 el aprovisionamiento de material y hombres para el ej\u00e9rcito franquista.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A finales de 1938 la actividad se reanud\u00f3 con renovada mano de obra forzada. Desde ese momento, las principales tareas fueron la colocaci\u00f3n de balasto entre Valjunquera y Pinell \u2014trabajos que obligaron a abrir canteras en distintos puntos del trazado en condiciones de explotaci\u00f3n muy duras\u2014, el tendido de ra\u00edles entre el citado pueblo de la Terra Alta y Aldover, adem\u00e1s de la reconstrucci\u00f3n de infraestructuras destruidas durante la convirti\u00f3 en centro de mando y acantonamiento de mano de obra. Parte del BBTT n\u00ba 69, el BBTT n\u00ba 163 y el BDST n\u00ba 18 trabajaron en el pueblo y sus alrededores hasta 1942. Los almacenes de la antigua cooperativa situados junto a la v\u00eda fueron reconvertidos en alojamiento de prisioneros. En la zona norte del casco urbano, se abrieron destacamentos temporales en las partidas de Les Valls y Xalamera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En un pueblo peque\u00f1o como Xerta, la presencia de aquel contingente tan numeroso de hombres no pas\u00f3 inadvertida. En 1940 hab\u00eda acantonados en el municipio 1.307 trabajadores forzados. El trabajo era duro y peligroso, requer\u00eda mucho esfuerzo f\u00edsico, siempre a la intemperie, eran numerosos los accidentes, los prisioneros ten\u00edan poco descanso, una mala alimentaci\u00f3n, padec\u00edan castigos f\u00edsicos, una constante instrucci\u00f3n ideol\u00f3gica y la sensaci\u00f3n permanente de explotaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">El ayuntamiento franquista actu\u00f3 de enlace con otras administraciones que reclamaban informaci\u00f3n de los reos y, en casos de emergencia, solicit\u00f3 a los mandos la mano de obra gratuita. En octubre del mismo a\u00f1o, miembros de un batall\u00f3n repararon los da\u00f1os causados por una tromba de agua. En otro caso, reformaron la capilla de San Zeno en la calle Major.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">La larga estancia de los reos facilit\u00f3 relaciones amables con los vecinos, como la creaci\u00f3n de un equipo de f\u00fatbol formado por prisioneros y j\u00f3venes del pueblo, denominado \u2018<em>Batall\u00f3n de Trabajadores de Cherta\u2019<\/em>. El conjunto se enfrent\u00f3 en partidos amistosos con otros equipos ebrenses y fue la semilla del equipo de f\u00fatbol local recuperado tras la parada forzada por la Guerra Civil. Otro v\u00ednculo relevante fueron distintas relaciones sentimentales surgidas entre reclusos y soldados del batall\u00f3n con chicas del espa\u00f1ol. Entre los catalanes hab\u00eda soldados de la quinta del biber\u00f3n nacidos en 1920. Uno de ellos era el barcelon\u00e9s Joan Llarch Roig, combatiente en la batalla del Ebro y esclavo del franquismo en el BBTT n\u00ba 69, destinado a la v\u00eda de la Val de Zaf\u00e1n. el 10 de septiembre de 1941, coincidiendo con las Fiestas de la Cinta de Tortosa, se organiz\u00f3 el viaje inaugural del nuevo tramo entre Bot y Tortosa. Pocos meses antes, en abril, el ministro de Obras P\u00fablicas, Alfonso Pe\u00f1a, hab\u00eda presidido una visita por el nuevo trayecto. A su paso por Xerta, relata la cr\u00f3nica de <em>La Vanguardia Espa\u00f1ola<\/em>, \u00ab<em>el batall\u00f3n de trabajadores n\u00famero 18 rindi\u00f3 honores al ministro hall\u00e1ndose en la estaci\u00f3n gran cantidad de p\u00fablico, que le vitore\u00f3<\/em>\u00bb. El tramo ebrense estuvo en servicio durante 31 a\u00f1os hasta su cierre definitivo en 1973. La primera piedra de la v\u00eda ferroviaria se hab\u00eda colocado en 1882 en la Puebla de H\u00edjar, inicio del trayecto. El \u00faltimo tramo proyectado, de Tortosa a la R\u00e0pita, no se puso nunca en servicio.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close content main div --><\/div><\/div><div
